Manifest Destiny- the way that Americans came to think about western expansion. Kind of like the idea of “city upon a hill”. Americans were successfully spreading out and using land, etc. America had a goal to spread all the way across the pacific ocean. A national mission (god sanction) came in in the 1840’s.
Mexico in 1821 claimed independence using the ideas of the American revolution to get there. The Americans wanted to buy some of the territory from them and the Mexicans did not accept. They wanted to develop it and start things. The southerners wanted Mexico because Mexico has land for cotton. Mexicans problems: as much as they wanted the territory, there weren’t a lot of Mexicans living there. If they don’t have a lot of people it remains undeveloped and it can be easy for it to be taken away from them. So they say we will invite people and they have to follow these 3 rules…
Rules: They cant have slaves. They wanted everyone to become Mexicans (Catholics) They wanted the people there to follow Mexican rules, tax laws, etc. Be citizens.
Stephen Austin- the Mexicans gave him land and he began to sell and more people began to come. Problem was that the rules they were supposed to live by, they didn’t live by. They needed their slaves to do the whole cotton thing but slaves were not aloud and all of the Americans were protestants and they were not interested in becoming catholic. By 1835 they had 35,000 people.
Mexico does 3 things: Come down hard on the topic of slavery. They begin to up taxes They say “no more immigrants”
Texas people rebel. Texas is not a part of US. It is an independent country (lonestar state). They asked the US if they would take them in as a state but the US said no because they knew that Texas wanted to go into war with Mexico so that meant that the US had to go to war with them and they didn’t want to. So Mexico fights and won the Alamo from 1846-1848
Sam Houston- the president of Texas and he defeated Mexico.
1836-1844 : Texas people are “Mexican free.”
How did the US get their mitts on Texas? They were scared of war and political shit. Half of the country were slave states and the other half were free states so they thought that if they added another slave state (Texas) then there would be two more senates in the slave states then in the free states so it wouldn’t be balanced.
1840- Harrison (Whig) - pro free labor, pro bank. He dies of illness after the first couple of weeks in office. - Tyler (Democrat)- After Harrison’s death he becomes president. He was kicked out and did nothing right during his time in office so he tried to do something famous. He was pro-slavery so during the last couple of weeks during his time, he bought Texas and let the next president (Polk) deal with what happened with it afterwards. Polk wanted to go to war because of the whole manifest destiny thing. They wanted to own all of the states. He goes to war with California, Mexico, everything around there. They defeat the Mexicans but the Mexicans don’t care. So they make a treaty called the Guadalupe-Hidalgo. The treaty states that the Americans will agree to pay 15 million dollars for the lands (New Mexico, Texas, and California) and they agreed to pay the debt (3 million) that Mexico was in. Some reasons why some Americans didn’t want Texas was because of race (look at the packet).

Sectional Strife (Conflict between North and South)
Andrew Jackson- a southerner and then migrated into the west. Poor people supported him. People like him had made coalitions which unified people.
1820 (Great Compromise)- the issue of the admission of Missouri as a new state. Missouri was the first state to apply to the union as the new statehood. Causes debate because they want to know whether it is a slave state or a free state. Slavery was not just a moral issue, neither an industrial issue, but it also was about fundamentally organizing the economy and your company. The north believed that slavery was archaic. If they were to have slaves then they would have to feed them, have health care for them, clothe them etc. The way they thought about it was that if they would have slaves then they would have to take care of them (feed them, clothe them, make sure they are in good health to work) and that would cost more money. So if they just hired people who were not slaves then all they have to do is hire and fire. They have no responsibility of that person. On top of that they can pay them as little or as much as they want to their workers so more money would come in. The Southerners thought differently. They believed that the people of the North were doing something immoral by not having slaves because you have no responsibility of the worker and all you care about is getting the money in which is a whole bunch of crap but they were just trying to give an excuse to the Northerners of why they have slaves. In 1820 Missouri applies for state hood (as a slave state)
Henry Clay (was anti slavery but owned slaves)- they called him the “great compromiser” He wanted to do what was best for the union as a hole. He said that since Missouri (pro-slavery) and Maine (anti-slavery) wanted to become states, they should let both of them enter as states so that the senates will be balanced once again. But he began to think ahead and thought of another idea; known as the 36-30. The 36-30 was a line made in the middle of the Louisiana Purchase. Any land south of the line had slaves and anything North of the line had no slaves.
1850: Henry Clay makes another compromise know as the Compromise of 1850 which the government accepted. The Compromise states that the North would get California which would obviously be a free state, Utah and New Mexico would be organized by popular sovereignty, and Washington DC. Also in liking of the North, Slave trade was made illegal in Washington DC. The South also got some good things out of this Compromise. They agreed to get rid of slave trade in Washington DC but said that it must be allowed to have slaves there. Called the Compromise of 1850. Government excepts this compromise which was this. Also the congress promised that they would not interfere in any of the trading that went on between the states. Out of this compromise they also got a promise known as the Fugitive Slave Act which is a promise from the Northerners that they will allow bounties (people who track people down) to go to the North and capture the escaped slaves from the South. Also, the police and the citizens of the North were required by law to help the bounties if they were seen in that situation. The Southerners then began to notice that this Slave Act was not working out because it began to upset the northerners because it made them realize how much they disliked slavery. After they go it, they began to notice it wasn’t working. So the northern people began to be very energetic about this whole Slave Act which made a bigger tension between the North and the South.
After The Mexican American War 1844-1848: After they won Texas and the Mexican Cession they thought of an idea that they should do another 36-30 all the way across to California
David Wilmot (ANTI SLAVERY): Wilmot proviso. As the senate is voting for the bill that is going to fund the Mexican American fund, he said that there should be no slave states when they win Mexico. All states should become free. This obviously causes a lot of controversy amongst the Congress and the Slave states. He says the 36-30 is unconstitutional.
Possibilities the Congress Were Considering: Wilmot’s plan J.C. Calhoun (PRO SLAVERY)- government has nothing to say about this and the federal government has no right in this decision because the states own the states, not the government. He says the 36-30 is unconstitutional and that every state should be a slave state. Popular Sovereignty- the state decides, not the government. Why don’t we just extend the 36-30?
The southerners wanted more slave states because they noticed they were loosing land and so this guy went and took over.. He was over powered and the slave state went away.
November 18, 2004
Franklin Pierce: bad president. Cuba would make a really good state for slaves. The Southerners wanted Cuba to become a slave state and they asked Spain if they could have it and they declined because Cuba was the last bit of empire that they had. They sent a man named Ostend to Europe’s major nations and starts to negotiate approval from them. Because of all of this, the Northerners began to get angry because the Southerners were playing games with Europe to get more slave states which leads to greater anger between the North and the South.
Kansas- Nebraska Act (1854) - Stephen A. Douglas was a senator (northern democrat) who didn’t care about slavery and just cared about his career. In order to win votes, he said that he wanted to have a railroad run across Illinois to win votes. The democrats say that he can put the railroad if they do something for them. They said that he must take away the 36-30 line and he accepted. He recommended that the Kansas and Nebraska territory would come in as popular sovereignty when they become a state. Nebraska is caca.. No good crop land etc. Kansas is a different story. Everyone out to get it. The territory of Kansas becomes the playing field for a very dangerous “sport”. becomes a competition. Abolitionists begin to give money to people ( northerners) to move to Kansas so that the state can become a free state. When it looks like Kansas is going to vote on an anti slavery thing, the people of Missouri come in and vote on the Kansas territory and vote for slavery. They attack a town and they forbid the people from voting. They do not live a life of quiet desperation. When the votes are tallied, the outcome is that Kansas has a pro-slavery government. John Brown comes in and starts to kill pro-slavery people for revenge. Kansas then became known as the Bleeding Kansas. Kansas ends up with two governments. One pro and one anti. The violence extends from Kansas to the hollow halls of our government (Washington DC)
Charles Sumner (MA, Senator)- He was appalled by what was going on in Kansas and begins to bad mouth the pro-slavery people that were there. Andrew Butler (SC, Senator)- Charles had made a comment about him because he was pro-slavery. Preston Brooks (SC, House)- Preston, Butler’s nephew, gets angry at what Charles had said about his uncle that he goes to the senate and hits him with a cane.
Election of 1856 becomes important because: 1. Whoever wins this election will be the one to basically decide over the Kansas issue. 2. It’s the first time that the opposition party comes out.. The republicans. People where so angry about the whole Kansas thing that Whigs, no bodies, northern democrats, etc. all came together and formed the republicans, the anti slavery. The republican party begins to become very powerful and gets the pro-slavery government worried.
James Buchanan (proslavery) comes in. Kansas has the two governments. The proslavery government part drafts the Lecompton constitution. It was a proslavery constitution the to the federal government. The anti-slavery people do the same thing. So now the feds have to decide which one they are going to choose. He endorses the proslavery thing. He strongly encouraged it. The congress accept it but the house of representatives say we will except it only if there are enough votes. Some of the southern congressman offered Kansas a bribe. They said that if they accepted the Lecompton Constitution they would give them land and if they didn’t then they wouldn’t get statehood. Kansas did the right thing and did not become a state.
1859: When Kansas was finished with, John Brown (anti slavery) says that he isn’t done. Takes a group of 18 men , goes to Harper’s Ferry, Virginia where the arsenal (where the military keeps their weapons) was located and attack it, he captures it, and he takes the weapons. He was planning on conquering the arsenal, free the slaves, and move his way southward until all of the slaves rebel and slavery would be abolished. This was important because he did something that the southerners were most afraid of which was slave rebellion. So the Northerners began to praise John Brown and the southerners began to think that all the people of the north were like John brown and caused a bigger gap between to the north and the south.

South were paranoid about Lincoln in power because they thought he was going to abolish slavery but Lincoln had no intention in doing that. Lincoln believed that the blacks were inferior to the whites but they should be aloud to have the same freedom as everyone else. Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and South Carolina break from the United States. These states form their own government know as the Confederacy. The confederacy elects Jefferson Davis as their president. Lincoln did not accept this succession as legal but then the Southerners’ brought up the Old States Right to try and prove him wrong. The Old States Right stated that if the people did not agree with something that the federal government does, they can back away from it. But Lincoln, again, did not accept it because when he said “the people” he meant all the people, of the North and South; not locally. (?) What he then did was he told the Southerners that Fort Saunter (a military base in South Carolina) still belonged to the union and not to the confederacy. Lincoln then says that he will send supplies to the soldiers that are there but he will not send anymore soldiers, weapons, etc. The Southerners do not believe Lincoln and attack Fort Saunter. Both sides are at war.
Strengths of the North: More Money Industry Population was larger Better transportation
Strengths of the South: Had an extreme amount of land which made it hard for the Northerners to take over them. They are fighting a defensive war so all they have to do is sit and wait. Since they were fighting on their own turf, they were familiar with what was around them. Better soldiers because when the South began they had to “start from scratch” with their military. So everyone was trained, young, and strong unlike the soldiers of the North. Abraham says that the people of the North should go and take over Richmond (capital of the confederacy). People begin to sign up and they think that attacking Richmond will be a piece of cake. When they got there, it was hell. Since the North were so confident in themselves, they ended up loosing against the South and were forced to leave and go back to Washington. Abraham notices he has a long battle ahead of him.
General Winfield Scott- came up with a plan known as the Anaconda Strategy to win the war against the South. Scott gave it that name because he said that the anaconda kills its prey by crushing the life out of it, and that was exactly what he wanted done. His plan was the capture the Mississippi because 1) it was the only means of transportation for funneling goods for the South so he wanted to blockade the South so that no goods get there 2) it will cut the confederacy in half (west and east) . Scott says that after they have accomplished that, all they had to do was just sit back and wait. Lincoln agrees with everything that Scott suggested except he did not want to just sit back and wait. So Lincoln appoints George Mcgellen to command all the military forces for the east. Mcgellen was very good at bringing the army together and had a good heart. He didn’t want to send his well trained soldiers into this war but Lincoln orders him to and he obeys. He lands with his troops towards the east to Richmond. He kills 20,000 to the loss of 10,000 of his own. The death poll is vast but he is still winning. He gets in contact with Robert Lee and leaves but not because of Lee. Mcgellan could not watch so many of his soldiers die; he got his soldiers and left which was a big defeat for the North.
Ulysses S. Grant- is able to capture most of the Mississippi and becomes a rising star in the army. The anaconda plan is starting to work but the South isn’t worrying about it. They are convinced that England was going to come and help them because England bought their cotton from the South but the English never end up coming to help them because: they bought so much cotton that they didn’t need anymore, and they had a huge empire and started to make cotton in other places such as Egypt. England had outlawed slavery. Lincoln saw this and passed something that would let him benefit from that. This was known as the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. He makes this speech that all the slaves of the confederacy should be free (though he has no say in what happens with the slaves there because the Confederacy is not part of the Union) so that England can be on the side of the North and not go with the South. People of the North notice this, and this causes him to be hated by many people. And after all of this, he never accomplished anything, did not free a single slave with that.
Lee was going to invade the north and try to have some victory of the union. His plan was to scare the Northerners so that they will have to concede defeat and they will have to acknowledge the independence of the South. He has two defeats: Antietem and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg he has this major defeat and he lifts back into the south, being very weakened. Lincoln then chooses grant and made him the head of the forces. Grant’s favorite subordinate was Sherman and they launched a two prongs assault on the south. Lees forces are in Richmond. There are other forces in Atlanta. Sherman will attack Atlanta and Richmond. Lee and Sherman were at it and neither of them were giving up. This is coming up on the election and Lincoln is sure he will lose. He got news that Sherman won Atlanta so Lincoln was elected. The south now knows that they cannot count on Lincoln anymore to lose. When Sherman takes Atlanta, Sherman then marches from Atlanta to savanna and begins to burn everything. Lee sees him coming and tries to escape. Grant then chases after him and corners him in Appomattox. They are forced to surrender and the north win.

Reconstruction- the term applies to the government (union) after the civil war beginning in 1865. Either than the reconstruction in the north, there was an even deeper reconstruction in the south because most of the battles had taken place there (1 out of 10 had been killed). Farms, cities, railroad tracks, and many other things were destroyed and at this point the south was in shambles. As for the slavery, the people of the south had invested a total of two billion dollars on them and at the end of the war all the slaves were free so it was just a big waste of money. In conclusion, the south was in poverty, it was destroyed, and needed to be reconstructed. Great benefit to those who have been enslaved. African Americans responded differently to being free. Many of them were asking for guns to fight for their freedom. They also wanted to get revenge on their masters and many of them began to whip and torture them as they had done to them. Although many had acted out of their freedom, many African Americans just stayed put because their freedom was never a sure thing. At first Lincoln did not allow them to fight and then as time passed he made it okay. The African Americans began to search for their families that were once taken away from them during slavery. These Africans don’t have education, they don’t have property, they don’t have anything so the question was how are you going to start any sort of “revolution” if you don’t have anything to begin with? One of the first thing that is done by the federal government is the Freedmen’s Bureau. It was a welfare society to give basic needs to African Americans who had nothing. They promised land on top of education and all of that. In the end, that promise of having the land didn’t work out and the whole education thing wared off. During this period, the north had grown incredibly powerful after the civil war and everyone was pro- free labor. So because they were so powerful, the North and their government decided to reconstruct for the African Americans.
Leaders in the Congress: Radical republicans- against slavery- Thaddeus Stevens and Charles Sumner-Stevens wanted to be buried in a black cemetery and Charles Sumner was the man who got beat with a cane. They believed the south should be punished severely for their sins. Lincoln had something else in mind and thought of the 10% plan. Once 10 percent of the voting population of one of the slave rebellion states does two things can be part of the union. The first thing they had to do was sware a loyalty oath to the union and the second was that they had to accept that slavery was illegal. The radical republicans don’t agree with this 10 percent plan. They proposed the Wade- Davis Bill. “We want to do the following, we want majority of voters (51%) and they have to take a iron clad oath to sware loyalty in the future and in the past.” There are not enough people in the south. Math does not add up so they cannot do this. So now the south must allow the blacks to vote because the blacks did not rebel. Lincoln vetoes the bill. Shoots it down. Lincoln is assassinated shortly after. Radical republicans now happy. Now the vice president is in power (Andrew Johnson).. republicans think that they can take advantage of him. Andrew was a southerner and that is why Lincoln chose him (emancipation proclamation). Ended up following Lincolns plan but changed a few things. He added the 13th Amendment (no slavery). Accepted the 10% plan. He offered something else (pardous)- if u come to me and beg ill pardon u. he feels powerful. He starts to pardon everyone, even people that Lincoln would never have chosen. Now south gains. They get so upset they make something called black codes: blacks cannot have property, cant vote, no more 13th amend, NOTHING… they also had to work. The whites began to manipulate the blacks (whole farming story). The blacks are now back in “slavery”. When the black codes happen, the radical republicans say NO FUCKING WAY. They say in order to challenge the black codes, they made the 1866 Civil Rights Bill- gave the rights to blacks- they could own property, run around on their own. Took it to the pres, vetoed, still went by it. Became a law. They wanted to take it a step forward- 14th amendment- makes the civil rights bill in the constitution- anyone born in the united states is an American citizen. The south was out of the loop in terms of congress. The south rejected the 14th amend. So now you cannot come back into the union and u will be under military sheiza until u do what we want. The Military Reconstruction 1867.
December 8, 2004
Reconstruction Continued- after the election of 1868, it was easier to do business when you are friends with your workers and just forget about the blacks. The desire for profit outweighed the idea of moral business practices.. Scandal after scandal after scandal. Credit mobilier scandal (union pacific railroad)- the government wanted to build a transcontinental rail road,, from the east to California. The railroad needed to be built and hired the union pacific railroad to build it. The union pacific railroad company makes a dummy company called the credit mobilier and begins to take money from the government. The end. The government wasn’t working for the people, but for money and business. South: it was easier and more lucrative to work with the south instead of working with the blacks. Peanut oil.. Use blacks as labor. There is one event that ends the reconstruction which is the election of 1867. Tildon was the democrat and Rutherford B. Hayes was the republican. Both were running for the same types of things. Both supporters of hard money, money you can redeem for gold. BIG BUSSINESS. Neither of them win. Congress decides that “we are going to create a committee” 5 members of the supreme court, 2 republicans, 2 democrats, and 1 independent. Independent making this fair. The republicans wanted to get more republicans onto the congress so they offered the independent a better job. Independent leaves and goes to the better job. The republicans take over that spot and obviously put another republican in there. The republicans will now win the election. The democrats say “lets cut a deal” compromise of 1877. “look give us the presidency and let Rutherford win, in return, we will forget about reconstruction and forget about everything. Republicans hate this offer because (?) The south failed to construct civil rights.
(!!!!) Consequences for African Americans: the KKK may now hurt the blacks in the open.. No more secrets. The black codes r now back. Jim crow. Sidewalk caca story. South/… abdtimes. Nadir- lowest point. Pressy Vs. Ferguson: it was a case os segregation, challenging them, the s.c. dec.. the south should be segregated.

The West
What do u think of when u think of the Old West? Cowboys, Indians, ghost towns, bank robberies, saloons, bandits, outlaws, sheriffs, barbers, frontier towns. What makes cowboys such a powerful myth? Guns, duals, all-american, bravery, freedom, independence. Mythology of the cowboy: go into the middle of the wild west and do as much as u can do and suceed. Minors= 1849 = great gold rush in California. In 1859 another gold rush. When they go out anf find this gold, they think they could be self sufficient but it didn’t end up that way. Minors wanted to get rich fast. Ghost towns- no gold here lets go. They weren’t getting enough gold. Some people found the mountains of gold but didn’t know how to mine it. So people of the west came and gave little pay to the guy who found it and the miners took most of the money. Some minors become farmers but nto really. They end up becoming cowboys. You could raise good cattle in texas. Playing at the long drive. Their job was to ttake the cattle to the railroad depos and just have the cattle get on railroad to Washington to chop them up. Beef industry. They were not settlers or farmers, just shoveling product (truck drivers) from one place to the other. To be a cowboy u must be involved in the meat industry. The cowboy lasts for 1866-1888. Cowboys end up dying out because of the next wave of population known as the Homesteaders (homestead act of 1862). You want to settle the area with people. The govermnet creates that act. Ur gonna attract permanent settlers in the west. If u go out west and settle we will give u 168 acres of land. All u have to do is live there for 5 five years, improve it, and pay 30 bucks at the end of the 5 years. A lot of people didn’t realize that all the of the land was less valuable (desert) though they thought they were getting a good deal. The other problem with this act was the railroad. Railroad was in a checkered pattern and the empty spaces were free for people to buy. The railroad land was the most valuable land. They could sell if for alott more or they can develpo it themselves. There were a lot of loopwholes. The person would take 12 inches x 14 inches of the valuable land and say, I developed it, and then they could take the hwole very expensive land. Some went to the west and went back and others did it good. Planted wheat= and corn: cash crops. Now that u have people buying only wheat and crops, everybody was putting their effort in producting this caca that they were self reliant on that and not independent.

Industrial America (1865-1900)- it also known as the era of capitalism. It is similar and kind of an extension to the market revolution but the market was about connectivity and industrial was about taking that already structed crap from market revolution by using technology and science to make it larger and better. This is not just happening in america; this was a global perspective. Market revolution began in England first and then “transported” to america. Germanym England, and united states: industrial giants. The US were better in the sense of industry then England because they were willing to take chances because they had no “traditions” like the English. Technology: example; steel (Bessemmer Process 1870). Before the civil war all railroad track was made of iron but a guy owned some steel mills and they transformed iron into steel. Created upon itself. It made a lot of new jobs but also created jobs that are diskilled. Since there is technology little work is needed. Power: steam becomes primary source of power so now the buildings can move away from the water (which was away from the city) and this is good because they are closer to the city. This is also bad because …. Electricity-

Urbanization- has to do with the rise of cities. In this era industrial life becomes huge. From 1870-1900 population grew a lot throughout everywhere. Three different immigrations: Old immigration: 1820-1850’s- lots of irish, germans, and british. New immigration: 1880-1930: Italians, Chinese, Mexicans. Most of the new immigrants came from 40 million from eastern and southern Europe. Another 20 million people poured in from asia and latin america. Push and pull factor: push: thos efactors that push people away; pull: factors that bring people “in”. “american dream” (both push and pull): the reason that other people needed somewhere to go is that the process of industrialization is not just affecting th eunited states at this time, the united states was selling railroads to Russia, Africa, middle east, everywhere. Wut happens in Russia is HOW WHERE THEY BOTH PUSH AND PULL…new imigration: significance: change america: …..GO AFTER SCHOOL TO FINISH REST OF NOTES…..City life:

Reform Reform movements- women arguing for equal rights, abolitionist, helping mentally ill, schools They were interrupted by the civil. War, problems are no longer the same and makes it harder. Social Darwinism - Charles Darwin (1859). Survival of the fittest , only to explain the physical world. Science was gaining ground. Scientific explanations for strange occurrences. Herbert Spencer - he thought Darwin had good ideas, took the idea of survival of the fittest and related it to human behavior. It becomes the dominant way of thinking in this time period. He says you cant change the truth, that’s the way it is. Counter arguments: Reform Darwinists- Pragmatist- (William James)- he says that you cant find the truth, you should measure truth by weighing the motivations and the consequences, and then decide whether its right or not. You can change truth. Social gospel movement- religion had been co opted by science. They wanted to recapture religious ideas, and address them to the problems that were happening. Edward Bewllamy- (1887) Haymarket - one of the worst moments Jane Adams- she bought into the ideas of pragmatism and socialism. She buys this house and converts into a half way house, where immigrants can get all sort of help, schooling, shelter, ect. (Hull House). They turned against her because she was trying to help refine them. So she tried to be like them, engage them on their own terms, accepted their cultural traditions. She compromised. She embraced the idea of social sciences, they gathered data from the city to use it against the government, so that they change it to benefit those would had lack of means.

1899- Spanish american war finished. America now finds itself with new possessions. America has always rejected colonialism. And wut they do with territories is that they give citizenship to all the people who live there and start building from there. They were scared to do it to this because it would have made the people there citizens and they didn’t wanna do that. What are we gonna do with these lands? They wanted Philippines to put a navy base there so they could attack china. They have troops there. The answer comes from the Philippines itself. Emilio aguinaldo- the phillipino version of george Washington fighting for democracy, et.c when the Americans come in and whipe out the Spanish and were doing it for selfless reasons and not for colonization. Riley killed philipino delema thing. When this gets abck to the senate, he said that the phill bothered the honorable american and that is why they shouldn’t be there. Americans took ever. Filipino american war- unlike the splendid little war, it was far longer and it was worse. The Filipinos lose many many people by starvation, and battle. Cost them 400 million dollars to the Americans. It is far more sig. Then the Spanish american war. Election of 1900-William Jennings Bryant who was running against McKinley and saying that we had to go to war. McKinley was the one who didn’t wanna go to war. He used this to try to beat him on this. We now have a war, we need stuff to fight the war, we r respected, if ud o a cost analysis we are now a powerful nation so we can go to war. With the victory of McKinley you have a victory of expansion. He wasn’t matched as far as temper. Roosevelt was the vice president. McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist and so now Roosevelt is in power.. Nahunan. His foreign policy- he was a secoail Darwinist, strength shouldn’t be hidden, if someone if weaker then u, tell them to do things for u with a force. Panama- the united states wanted to build a canal there. Roseville started to develop a strong interest in making that canal. There was a French company bunau-varilla who was in columbia arranges with some people. Ask about panama thing (!!!!!). Ex of foregin policy- Roosevelt corollary- like the Monroe document- no eurpean

Progressives- themes: many problems forming because of industrialization. People cant find work, no security, economic depressions, before: 100, after: 1000 people working. Because of all fo these problems, industrial class struggle. Tension on the middle class: people find it more difficult to be their own bosses. Middle class felt like they were being eaten away. Threatened which led to reform movements. The most powerful labor organization was AFL: existed to protect the rights of skilled laborers. Technology made factories more efficient. Power tools were used more so skilled laborers weren’t needed as much.
Fredrick Taylor: had a nervous breakdown. He was very analytical and tried to make people work faster than humanly possible. He was trying to make them act like machines.
Progressives: international movement. Americans had to deal with the fact that they had a federal. Order and efficiency ß not cohesive as a group. Women should be @ home. Arguments: too frail to work.

World War I : one of the reasons why the us wanted to get into the war was because they wanted peace with everyone. He knew that if he didn’t get out into war, then there would be on peace. When the Americans go overseas, the war is almost over. The germans get within site of paris and then the Americans push forward against germany which will later on form peace. The Americans also arrange the war with separate troops. No mixing troops with their allies. The French were critical about the Americans decision because they said they are not as experiences etc. the 92 division, the armed forces used the blacks as servants, etc. so they didn’t have the skills to perform. African Americans sign because they were embraced by French society. They got a taste of whats out there. Not also did they get a sense of whats out there, it was a globalconnection. Heros: Albert York- when he started, he was opposed to the war, he gets drafted, and is armed with just a pistol and kills 160 people.. crazy man. Oklahobee- native American- captures 100 germans in one instance. Create concensus: 1. CPI à George Creel – propaganda – billboards, etc. 100% American. Consequences for going against American decisions: Espionage and Sedition Act: you cannot help the enemy, if you in any way promote insubordination, you go to jail. They are used to put people away. How do u define American? Eugene v. debbs (ran in 1920 and lost) – he gets targeted- I don’t believe in the draft. I don’t believe in the war. So they put him away (arrested in 1919)- while in jail he still gets a million votes. Shows enough people are for him. So the espionage is not just targeted at individuals but against anti-progressives. They did no like ethnicity, socialists, etc. all these businesses are not acting correct. Efficiency – railroad story-. Capital and labor. If u have an oppressive businessman making workers unhappy, ur stuff is not gonna be produced on time. Wilson made the W.L.R.B – you have to have a minimum wage, certain hours. They also went to labor, A.F.L., order and efficiency. One of the thoughts for Wilson, if you are going to send them overseas they have to be pure and fit for the job. You cant drink or have prostitution etc. many diseases were spread because of the prostitution. Clemence offered to give them liscened prostitutions. When the war was over, Wilson insisted that he was the only moral one who was invisioned enough to decide. He told the world his five ideals. Self determination No empire Freedom of the ocean Freedom of trade League of nations Europe doesn’t go with any of those five ideals. Wilson loses on everything except the league of nations. He needs to sell this to the Americans now. Doesn’t come through to the united states but it does to the rest of the world. Wilson is almost a complete failure. * hello kids..if your having trouble finding an id just press find and then type in the keywords.. also.. if some of the notes are hard to understand, its because i was typing them really quickly during class and i never had a chance to revise them. if u have any questions lemme know.

Utopian Socialism and Marxism (McKay, pp. 764-766)
Characteristics of socialist thought • State will play big role in planning economy (opposite of free-trade laissez faire (Adam Smith)). • State should intervene to ensure greater economic equality. • State should regulate private property- maybe even abolish it- state owns everything. Saint-Simon, Charles Fourier, Proudhon Saint-Simon- Believed that society should be governed by (techincal) experts such as economists, scientists, etc... Charles Fourier- He envisioned agriculture comunes and believed in free love (very controversial). He thought that people shouujld perform different jobs every day (to avoid boredom). Proudhon- Believed that property is theft. He was an anarchist (hates and fears power of the state) How was Marxism different from early socialism? Why did Marxism attract many more followers? Marx bases his ideas on economic and historical analysis- unlike utopian socialists. Karl Marx , what did he write (and what date) and what ideas were in it? The Communist Manifesto (1848). A quote from The Communist Manifesto is “Workers of the world, unite!”. How did Marx believe that capitalism would be destroyed? He said that capitalism contains the seeds of its own destruction – revolution inevitable because capitalism leads to greater and greater concentration of wealth in fewer hands (monopolies). This means many middle class people will be put out of business and fall into proletariat, when proletariat gets big enough and angry enough it will carry out revolution. Marxist dialectic Marx retained Hegil’s view of history as a dialectic process of change but made economic relationships between classes the driving force. In what ways was Marx wrong? Marx predicted that capitalism will inevitably result in monopolies and people will thereby be forced out of business and fall from the middle class into the proletariat which is not true because 1. Although monopolies did occur, the government of western democracies introduced anti-trust legislation to make them illegal- Marx had not foreseen this. 2. capitalism- by increased productivity – gradually raised the standard of living of most people i.e. raised many workers into the middle classes, rather than enlarge in the Bourgeoisie. How did he view religion? Progress? He said that “Religion is the Opium of the Masses” and he did not believe in progress because he believed in Communism which stops it.
Nationalism and the Unifications of Italy and Germany
What are the characteristics of modern nationalism? Thought that all those who inhabit the same nation-state should share: language, culture, ethnicity, ideas (goals), and geography. How was this different from the previous concept of states?
How did nationalism cause problems for multinational empires?
Unifications of Italy: Which methods and wars were involved in the unification, and what was the effect of each war on the unification process? In North, Cavour joins with Napoleon III to get Austria out successful (except Austria retains Venetia) In North, Garibaldi conquers Kingdom of the Two Siciles with 1000 red shirts. Austria loses war to Prussia and Italy gets Venetia. France loses war to Prussia and withdraws French troops from Rome, which the unite with Italy – Process of unification complete Roles of Mazzini, Garibaldi, Cavour, how were they similar and different?
Unification of Germany: What wars were part of the process of German unification, and what was the effect of each on the process of the unification of Germany? War of Prussia and Austria to take Schleswig and Holstein from Denmarck. Provoked war with Austria – results – Austria out of German affairs and North German states united with Prussia. Then the Franco-Prussian war – Bismarck edits Elms Telopam to provoke war with France – France is defeated – results – France humiliated, gives up Alsace Lorraine and, in Germany, southern states join North to Bismarck becomes chancelior , king becomes Kaiser. Who was Bismarck? What were his ideas, methods? • Bismarck was a master of politics • He was born into the Prussian landowning aristocracy • As a young man he was a wild and tempestuous student given to duels and drinking • He was always devoted to his Prussian sovereign • He had a strong personality and an unbounder desire for power • Bismarck reached his goal of Prussian expansion • Bismarck was extraordinarily flexible and pragmatic • “One must always have two irons in the fire” • He kept his options open pursuing one policy and then another as he moved with skill and cunning toward his goal • His basic goal was to build up Prussia’s strength and consolidate Prussia’s precarious Great Power status • He unified Germany Effect of unification of Germany on European balance of power
How is nationalism related to Romanticism?
What are the good and bad aspects of nationalism as an ideology?
Science (esp.Darwin) (Mckay, pp., 733, 813-815)
Thomas Malthus: what did he write and what did it say? How is this related to Darwinian theory? , Wrote An Essay on the Principle of Population that said that the population would always tend to grow faster than the food supply. In it he observed that human populations will double every 25 years unless they are kept in check by limits in food supply. By the late 1830's, Darwin came to realize that all plant and animal populations have this same potential to rapidly increase their numbers unless they are constantly checked by limitations in food, water, and other resources that are essential for survival. Charles Lyell, what did he write? Wrote Principles of Geology. He effectively discredited the long-standing view that the earth’s surface had been formed by short-lived cataclysms, such as biblical floods and earthquakes. He also said that the same geological processess that are at work today slowly formed the earth’s surface over and immensly long time. Charles Darwin, what did he write and what they say? The Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man. What is the difference between evolution and natural selection? How does natural selection work? Natural selection is “survival of the fittest” meaning that as time goes on the weak will die and the strong will survive and the cycle will move on like that and evolution is a theory that we evolve from something very to small to something very big (like evolution from apes) Why did Darwin’s ideas arouse so much controversy? They aroused so much controversy because they went against the Bible and people during that time believed everything that the Bible said and they were upset that he went against it.
What was Social Darwinism? How did Darwinism influence history beyond the field of the biological sciences?
What were his views about progress?
Modern Thought (The New Physics, Friedrich Nietzsche & Sigmund Freud) (McKay, pp. 927-30 & 931-933)
What were some of the principal characteristics of modern thought as it appeared in the late 19th and early 20th centuries? Uncertainty, anxiety, etc.
Nietzsche: what did he criticize in late 19th century civilization, and why? He hated many of the main trends of his own time e.g. democracy because he believes masses are mediocre and incapable of true leadership and greatness. He believed in the Ubermensh. Hated Christianity. Disliked nationalism and racism. Disliked science. What were his main ideas? • He hated many of the main trends of his own time e.g. democracy because he believes masses are mediocre and incapable of true leadership and greatness. • He believed in concept of Ubermensh • He hated Christianity – said “God is dead” – Christianity is “slave morality” advocates weakness, meekness, etc. • He disliked nationalism and racism (saw nationalism as modern substitute for religion) • He disliked science (rationalism believed great achievements come from passion, instinct, genius, intuition.) What did he mean by the Ubermensch? Ubermensch (superman)- the man who, by virtue of the most highly developed will to power, has grown and fulfilled is potential to the utmost. Ubermensch is characterized by ambition, pride, assertiveness, strength. Why would Nietzsche not have supported Nazism? Because Nazism believed in nationalism and racism and Nietzche didn’t believe in it. Be able to identify his principal works 1) Thus Spake Zarathustra 2) Beyond Good and Evil 3) On the Geneology of Morals What were his ideas about progress? Religion? He did not believein progress nor did he believe in religion.
New Physics: How did new scientific discoveries contribute to the sense of uncertainty in intellectual life in the period 1875-1925? The new scientific discoveries contributed to the sense of uncertainty because science brought up even more “what if’s” which made people wonder and become uncertain of things. Einstein’s theory of relativity
Heisenberg’s “principle of uncertainty” Proclaimed that scientific measurement (the measurement of electrons) was always a matter of statistical approximation.
Sigmund Freud: What were his main ideas? • Access to subconscious occurs through dreams • Childhood is the source of all our personality traits – early experience determines who we will be. • Our actions are determined by deep seated instinctual drives (e.g. sex, agression) and not by rational conscous motives. • Believed in the ID, Ego, and Superego Why were his views on childhood important and controversial?
Why did Freud think dreams were so important and what book did he write, date? The Interpretation of Dreams (1900) He said that the access to subconscoius occurs through dreams. What is the Oedipus Complex? Says that all boys want to kill the father and sleep with the mother What are the id, the ego, and the superego? • ID- instinctual drives to achieve personal gratification. • Superego- incorporates moral rules of society, parents, etc. • Ego- Moderates between ID and superego = result is personality. Why were his ideas so important? How did they change our understanding of human nature? How did Freud view progress? Religion? Does not believe in progress modern man is not civilized the way he believes himself to be but is just as driven by instinct as he ever was. Did not believe in religion.
Long-term and short-term causes of the First World War a. After Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871) completed German unification, Germany becomes known as second rich and ruled by Kaiser. Bismarck persued policy of peace for Germany by making alliances with other countries to avoid a war on two fronts. so germany makes alliances with russia, austria, and italy. these last two form triple alliance with Germany, one of two competing blocks that will help to cause WWI. (Triple alliance- Russia, Austria-Hungary (1879), Italy (1882))He wanted to keep france isolated diplomacy and make alliances with russia and austria-hungary. b. Big change in Germany. Kaiser Wilhelm I dies, succeded by his son, Wilhelm II --> Wilhelm II dismisses Bismarck, then Wilhelm II begins to persue agressive policies to give Germany a large role in the world (Weltpolitik). c. Wilhelm II begins to destroy diplomatic work of Bismarck by following policies that alienate other countries. d. Because of Kaiser's actions, France, Britain, Russia drew closer. France forms a military alliance w/russia in 1894. in 1904 england allies w/france and in 1907 w/russia. Triple entente now complete, second system of alliances leading to war.e. Very significant factor that has nothing to do with Germany serbian nationalism went to unite all south slavic peoples in new south slav state requires attacking Austro-Hungarian empire, where many slavic people live. f. Serbian nationalist and member of Black Hand (terrorist group) assassinates Archduke Franz Ferninand of Austria Austria asks germany if they will support them when they go to war with serbia and russia (they say yes). Effect of unification of Germany on European balance of power?
Wilhelm II – how were his policies different from Bismarck’s? Bismarck persueded policy of peace for Germany by making alliances with other countries to avoid war on two fronts and Wilhelm II followed policies that alienate other countries. The Anglo-German naval race. Why? Effects? Who was Tirpitz? Kaiser starts build up of German navy (under admiral Tirpetz) to challenge Britains naval predominance. Britain people feel threatened by this and also increase navy -- leads to naval army race. Because of this, France, Britain, And Russia draw closer. Alfrend von Tirpitz was the leader of German nationalist and saw a large navy as the legitamite mark of a great world power and as a source of pride and patriotic unity. The development of competing alliance systems? What were they called? Which countries made up each of them? Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy --> causes --> At the time of Bismarck, he thought that Germany should ally with countries so they allied with austria-hungary and italy. Triple Entente: Britain, France, and Russia --> causes --> Kaiser starts conflict with Britain (naval arms), threatens France (by questioning their rights to their colonies), and does not renew their alliance with Russia. So Britain, France, and Russia come together. The role of Pan-Slavic/Serbian nationalism in causing the war Serbian nationalism --> went to unite all south slavic peoples in one state --> requires attacking austria-hungarian empire, where many slavic people live --> Gavrilo Princip (Serbian nationalist and member of Black Hand) assassinates Franz Ferninand of Austria --> Austria asks Germany will support them in war with Serbia (they say yes) --> Austria gives Serbia an ultimatum --> they reject --> Austria declares war on serbia. How did Kaiser Wilhelm II provoke other European countries over their colonies? Agressively questions France's rights to their colonies which increased intercontinental tension. Assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand. Who? Why? Effect? Gavrilo Princip, Serbian nationalist and member of Black Hand, assassinates Ferninand, heir to Austro-Hungarian empires in sarajevo, captial of Bosnia --> result --> Austria decares was on Serbia. Assassinated him so they could get closer to take over the part of Austria-Hungary with the slavic people. Austria’s ultimatum to Serbia. Consequences? The Serbian government had just 48 hours in which to agree to cease all subversion in Austria and all anti-Austrian propoganda in Serbia. MOreover, a thorough investigation of all aspects of the assassination at Sarajevo was to be undertaken in Serbia by a joint commission of Serbian and Austrian officials --> Serbs reject --> Austria declares was on Serbs. Germany’s “blank check” to Austria: significance? Austria asks Kaiser if Germany will support Austria in war against Serbia and Russia. Kaiser gives Austria "Blank check"- unconditional support --> importance --> makes Germany create Schlieffen Plan --> and war against Russia. Also, if Germany would have not allied with Austria in the war, Austria might have felt too weak to fight alone and maybe the whole war would have not began. Crisis of July 1914? Why does Austria’s attack on Serbia lead to war involving so many European powers? Know the sequence of events that brings about war attitudes towards war in 1914. How do they change as war progresses? July 1914, Austria declares war on Serbia --> Russia mobilizes to protect Serbia, Germany mobilizes to protect Austria --> Germans put into affect the Schlieffen Plan -- to deal with war on two fronts --> Germany holds off russians in the east, attacks france with belgium --> brings france and england into war. all major european powers at war by end of first week of august. --> germans invade france --> schlieffan plan fails --> germans never take paris and western front (system of opposing trenches) stabilizes in Northern France. NOW IM GONNA TELL U THE SEQUENCE.. THIS IS KINDA CONFUSING SO PAY ATTENTION.. Austria-Hungary is allied with (Italy &) Germany who attacks Beligium which triggers France who is allied with Great Britain who is allied with Russia who is allied with Serbia who is going to was with Austria-Hungary. Result: Austria-Hungary and Germany go to war against France, Great Britain, Serbia, and Russia. :D that was fun Germany’s Schlieffen Plan. What is it? What is its purpose? It was to deal with the war on two fronts. They planned on attacking France via Belgium which did not suceed. The purpose of this was to destroy France (who was allied with Russia) before they fought with Russia. First Battle of the Marne; Gallipoli; Verdun; the Somme; Second Battle of the Marne First Battle of the Marne --> France stop German advance at start of war - signals failure of Schlieffen plan. Battle of Gallipoli --> Take place in Turkey - attempt by Brits/Australians to force Dardanelles straits, take Constantinople (Istanbul) and knock Turkey out of war and free up access to Black Sea for Russians. Battle of Verdun --> War of attrition - Germans force France to defend Verdun --> kill as many french as possible --> 1 million men killed on both sides. Batlle of the Somme --> Brits attack Germans to relieve pressure on Verdun - first day is worst day in British Military history. Second Battle of the Marne --> American intervention decisively tipped the scales in favor of Allied victory. Why does trench warfare develop in the West? The attempts of French and British armies to turn the German retreat into a rout were unsuccessful, and so were moves by both sides to outflank each other in northern France. As a result, both sides began to dig trenches to protect themselves from machine-gun fire. by November, an unbroken line of trenches extended from the Belgian parts through norther France, past the fortress of Verdun, and on the Swiss Frontier. Why is it so difficult for armies to break through?
What kinds of weapons are used in WW1? Pistols, bayonets, swords, machine guns (most IMPORTANT), gases, barrage, tanks, aircrafts, flamethrowers. What are conditions like in the trenches? They were horrible; young soldiers died and so when a soldiers fellow man died, they were surrounded by them and ended up in disillusionment, shell-shocked, etc. Role of Italy in WW1? Turkey? Bulgaria? Italy --> member of the Triple Alliance --> then became neutral for a year --> then became part of the Triple Entente because the entente promised them Austrian territory. Turkey --> allied with Germany --> Brits tried to take Dardanelles from them --> not successful. Bulgaria --> allied with Austria and Germany in order to get back at Serbia. T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia): significance? What was the Arab Revolt? Why did the British want to encourage it? During WWI, he worked in the Middle East --> sent to encourage arab tribes to revolt against ottoman empire --> British government tells arabs that if they revolt they will gain independance when was is over. The Sykes-Picot Treaty (1916): what did it say? 1916. It said that the British would give France half of the Middle East after the war was over (lying to the arabs)
1. The following 4 were all poets of WWI. a. Wilfred Owen, Dulce et Decorum Est means “It is sweet and proper to die for your country”. b. Rupert Brooke, The Soldier
c. Siegfried Sassoon, Glory of Women d. Ivor Gurney, To His Love What effect did WW1 have on the economies of the major combatants? How did it change them?
What effect did it have on women? What is total war? Women started working in industry, transportation, and labor forces in Russia. They began driving buses and street cars. Also became bank tellers, mail carriers, and police officers. Granted the right to vote. Started to smoke, wear shorter skirts in public, and bob their hair. Total war is when a country is devoted only to the war and nothing else (like food, industry, etc.) Effect of Russian Revolution of October 1917 on course of WW1 revolution caused the (Bulshivicks) to get out of the war.. thank u kristen :) Why did the first Russian revolution (March 1917) happen: causes?
Who ruled Russia in 1917? How did he rule? Czar Nicholas II. He ruled like a medieval king.. had total power. What was the Duma? Russia's lower house. Who was Rasputin? Why was he significant? He was a holy man. Queen Alexandra very much believed in his preachings. Alexandra's 5th daughter had hemophelia (a disease where your blood does not clot, so if u get even the smallest cut, you could die from excessive bleeding) --> medical science could do nothing --> only Rasputin (in Alexandra's eyes) could stop the bleeding through hypnosis --> this atmosphere of unreality lead to a steady revolution. He exerted a stron influence on the government and was later murdered for causing so much trouble. How did the Revolution start in March 1917?
What was the Provisional Government? What were its policies with regard to land redistribution? The war? Who was Alexander Kerensky? The provisional government established equality before the law; freedom of religion, speech, and assembly; the right of unions to organize and strike; and the rest of the classic liberal program. they refused to confiscate large landholdings and give them to peasants because they thought that if they did that the Russian army would become smaler. They wanted to continue the war. An agrarian socialist who thought that the continuation of war was still the all-important national duty. there would be plenty of time for land reform later, and thus all the governments efforts were directed toward a last offensive in July. What was the Petrograd Soviet? Why was it significant? What was Army Order no. 1? The Petrograd Soviet shared power with the provisional government. Its job was to suspiciously watch the provisional government. Issued its own radical orders --> weakening the provisional government. Army Order no. 1 was to strup officers of their authority and placed power in the hands of the elected committees of common soldiers. Who were the Bolsheviks? How were they different from the Mensheviks? They shared power with the provisional government. Its job was to suspiciously watch the provisional government. Issued its own radical orders --> weakening the provisional government. Army order no. 1 was to strup officers of their authority and placed power in the hands of the elected committees of common soldiers. The Bolshevik was Lenin's camp where he demanded a small, disciplined, elitist party. The Mensheviks, on the other hands, wanted a democratic party with mass membership. Bolsheviks- "the majority group"; Mensheviks- "the minority group". Who was Lenin? What were his 3 main ideas about revolution (pp. 912-913). This is especially important. He was a Marxist and developed his own revolutionary interpretations of the body and Marxian thought. His 3 main ideas about the revolution were: a. Stressed that capitalism could be destroyed only by violent revolution. b. under certain conditions, a socialist revolution was possible even in a relatively backward country like Russia. Thought capitalism was not fully developed there and the industrial working class was small, the peasants were poor and thus potential revolutionaries. c. The necessity of a highly disciplined workers party. Strictly controlled by a dedicated elite of intellectuals and fulltime revolutionaries like himself. What were Lenin’s slogans that he used to gain support from the workers and peasants during the summer of 1917? (p. 913) "All power to the Soviets" , "All land to the peasants" , "Stop the war now”. Who was Leon Trotsky? Why was he significant? The second most important person in the Russian Revolution; he executed the Bashevik seizure of power. Convinced the Petrograd Soviet to form a special miliarty- revolutionary committee in October and make him its leader. He insisted that the Bolsheviks reduce opposition to their coup by taking power in the name not of the Bolsheviks. How did the Bolsheviks come to power? Since democracy was giving way to anarchy, power was there for those who would take it. It had something that the Tsarist and the provisional government did not have; a determined and truly superior leadership. They were good at appealing soldiers and urban workers who were exhausted by war and eager for socialism. Once they had achieved power, how did the Bolsheviks hold onto it? The way that they held on to that power was because they had a closed constitutional assembly and established one-party state, used terror (cheka), "War communism" - the state takes over all functions - all food requisitioned from peasants without pay, and they won the civil war. Why was there a civil war in Russia between 1918 and 1921? Who won it? Why? Reason: Destruction of the democratically elected constituent Assembly. People thought they were getting dictatorshuip from the capital. The two groups of people who were fighting again each other were the Reds (The Communists; Lenin and his Bolsheviks) and the Whites (everyone who wasnt communist). Lenin won the war for these reasons.. him and his group controlled the center so it was alot easier to take over the Whites since they were all around them and they developed an army quicker then the Whites. What was the attitude of the Bolsheviks towards WW1? What was the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk? They wanted to be out of the war. lenin wanted them out.. The treaty of brest-litovsk was a treaty that the Germans and the Russians made. Lenin and the Bolsheviks said that they did not want war so Germany said that they wouldnt attack Russia if they gave them 1/3 of their land and that is what Lenin did. The entry of the Americans into the war? Why? When? Consequences? Background: From start of war, England undertakes naval blockade of Germany. 1915: Germans react with their own blockade of Britain - employ unrestricted submarine warfare (USW) -- Germans sink Lusitania with Americans on board - President Wilson threatens war -- Germans stop USW. 1917: Germany, suffering greatly from british blockade, decides to gamble: resume USW, knowing US will enter war, but hoping England will surrender before US can train army and make a difference. Two factors significant for US entry: 1. Zimmerman telegram --> Germans ask Mexico to invade US, in exchange for US territory if Germany wins war --> telegram intercepted and made public --> changes US public opinion in favor of war with Germany. 2. Spring 1917: Russian revolution occurs: Czar Nicholas II abdicates and RUssia begins to set up constitutional government --> this makes it easier for Wilson to ally with Russians, now that it is a fellow democratic nation. Paris Peace Conference: who were the Big Four? United States, Britain, France, and Italy. What did each country want?
Wilson’s Fourteen Points – what were they? How easy were they to implement? In 1917, Germany informed the US that it intended to resume unrestricted submarine warfare. Consequently, three American merchant ships were sunk, and at President Wilson's request Congress declared war with Germany. As fresh American troops arrived in Europe, German resistance became increasingly tenuous. It was left to President Wilson to provide the framework for a peace treaty. In his address to Congress, he proposed a fourteen-point plan. They werent easy to implement because many of the European countries werent really feeling his Fourteen Points. Which important countries were absent from the conference? Germany and Russia. What were the provisions regarding Germany in the Treaty of Versailles? First is Demilitirization -- The Rhine land will be a DMZ, German army must not exceed 100,000 soldiers and may not have a navy or air force. Second is War Guilt Clause- Germans forced to be responsible for starting the war and therefore must pay huge reperations (payments) --> exact amount to be determined later. Last is territory -- Germany lose Alsace Lorraine to France and Polish Lorridor to Poland. What happened in Germany at the end of the war? The became a republic (Kaiser left) and tried to have a communist revolution which did not succeed. Which countries were created at the end of WW1? From Austria-Hungary: Yugoslavia, Austria, Hungary, Czelchoslavakia, and Romania. From Russia: Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania (Bactic States) and Finland. From different countries: Poland. Which countries/systems of government disappeared? Austria- Hungarian, Ottoman, Russian, and German Empires. What was the League of Nations? It was the precursor of the United Nations. Tried to preserve peace by collective security. President Wilson proposed that in order to not have another very large war again, all countries must stop another country from attacking before it gets too big... this was not successful. Why did the United States senate not ratify the Treaty of Versailles and thus not become a member of the League? Because they did not want to go to war if it came to that.
1920s & 1930s
Weimar Republic in Germany: Nature of Weimar Constitution: flaws and strengths Liberal constitution, but weak and attacked by extremists of right and left. Strengths: A. It was democratic for the first time in Germany’s history which allowed all the people to vote for their government and vote them out if the did not like them. B. German people had complete free speech and the government placed very few restrictions on them. Germany became the freest country in Europe. C. The leaders of the Weimar Republic (Ebert and Stresemann) were able and well meaning and after 1923 they were able to help Germany to recover and become prosperous again. Weaknesses: A. It was associated with the Treaty of Versailles. This made some people who were right wingers enemies of the Weimar Republic. B. Some right wingers thought that the loss of power and strength of Germany was due to Germany now being a democracy. C. The Constitution produced weak governments. This was because it encouraged lots of small parties in the Reichstag and it was then difficult for any one party to gain control…Governments were made up of more than one party and sometimes they did not get on. This led to weak governments which could not deal with a big crisis. D. If there was a big crisis the president could just about take over the country and tule without the Reichstag (emergency laws). This could lead to dictatorship and the end of democracy. This is what happened when Hitler took over. E. The main German government sat in Berlin but Germany was also divided up into smaller states like Bavaria, Saxony, etc…each one of these could elect its own government and sometimes it was difficult for Berlin to control them. This could lead to disaster. F. The Weimar republic had powerful enemies. Those on the extreme right and the extreme left did not accept the new republic. These were people like the Freikorps and then the Nazis (on the right) and the communists (on the left). They all wanted to overthrow the Weimar republic and they also hated eachother. In the end it was the Nazis who actually destroyed Weimar. Difficulties faced by the republic: why were so many Germans hostile to it? The Weimar Republic was the body that signed the Treaty of Versailles, and to many, that was a betrayal. The consequences of Versailles were sever to Germany, and many were looking for someone to blame, the republic was the ideal scape goat. Communists and the right saw an opportunity to create a state that they wanted, and were prepared to challenge the new republic. Many richer Germans had lived well under the Kaiser and distrusted the new republic. Considering all of these points, it would seem that the collapse of the republic was expected. From the beginning the Weimar Republic faced opposition from both left and right. In the late 1920’s there was optimism for the republic but this optimism was dashed by the world depression and the Wall Street crash of 1929. This was when people began to turn to Hitler. The Nazi’s stirred up opposition to the republic by linking the republic to Versailles and linking Versailles to all of Germany’s problems. Hitler had a wide appeal. He attracted the workers because he promised employment, and appealed to the middle classes because they distrusted the current government. However, the elections of 1932 saw the Nazi’s lose two million votes at the expense of the communists. The one thing that these two groups had in common (Nazis and Communists) was that they wanted to change the system of government. That didn’t do well for the Weimar republic and the it was doomed. When at his trial, Hitler violently denounced the Wiemar Republic and he gained enormous publicity and attention. So basically, the Germans were hostile to the Wiemar republic because of the linkage to the Versailles and to all of their problems and because of how Hitler violently denounced it. Stab in the back theory Many accuse the Weimar Republic of “stabbing the army in the back” by making peace when Germany was not yet defeated at end of WWI. Hitler believed the armistice had not resulted from defeats on the battlefield but had instead come about because the Jews, Communists, Civilian Government, Socialists and others had undermined the government and the war effort leading to the armistice and the advent of the Weimar Republic. The principal was adopted and used as a running campaign by Hitler and was known as Dolchestossiegent (the stab in the back theory). Military leaders like Hindenberg promoted this theory. Hitler and the Nazis made the stab in the back theory a central tenet and vowed to destroy those who had betrayed Germany. French invasion of the Ruhr and its effects: the problem of hyper-inflation: how does this affect German society into the later 1920s and early 1930s The loss of German colonies made Germany feel weaker and less important. Britain was a great country because of its Empire. Germany had lost its Empire to the British and the French. It also meant that the Germans had fewer markets to trade its goods with. This made Germany’s economic recovery increasingly difficult. Wilson’s 14 points had promised self determination to all countries. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania all had the freedom to choose their governments. German speaking people had no choices and were put into other countries like Poland and Czechoslovakia. The League of Nations was set up to try and improve the world and prevent further wars. The Germans were forbidden membership. Rise of Adolf Hitler: his background, early life He first strived to become an artist but failed twice. He was very interested in politics and like many Germans, he believed that no government would last if it treated people of different nationalities equally. He moved to Munich and joined a group formally know as the Nazi Party. With his He to stir crowds with his speeches, he became leader of the Nazis and quickly built up party membership ability. Hitler attacked the government and declared that the Nazi Party could restore the economy, assure work for all, and lead Germany to greatness again. The SA and Ernst Roehm in the 1920s The SA or Sturmabteilung also called “Brownshirts” or “Storm Troopers” were Nazi thugs in uniform. The first units were founded in 1921. Hitler used them to help establish his powerbase, through street violence and the intimidation of political opponents. The were the Nazi’s private army (reached 3 million by 1933). The SA was a threat to both Hitler and the German army. Therefore Hitler had 1000 top leaders killed in the “Night of the Long Knives”. Throughout the period of Hitler’s rise to power, Ernst Roehm represented the militant wing of the Nazi Party as the chief organizer of the SA. He later became one of the original founders of the Nazi Party. In the 1920’s he helped Hitler secure the support of the army in Bavaria and is later imprisoned for his role in Hitler’s failed 1923 Beer Hall putch. After Hitler wins power in January 1933, he becomes increasingly alarmed by Roehm who is now demanding that the SA be placed on an ewual footing with the Nazi Party. Hitler, the German Army High Command, and Roehms arch-rival, SS leader Heinrich Himmler now see Roehm and his SA as a common threat. This leads to the “Night of the Long Knives”. The Beerhall Putsch (1923): Hitler in prison; Mein Kampf (principal ideas); what decision does Hitler make while in jail?
Effects of American involvement in German economy 1924-1929? The U.S. lends money to Germany so that it can pay France, which can then repay U.S. loans from WWI. These loans help Germany prosper, but in 1929 when depression comes, U.S. withdraws loans, Germany economy crashes and people begin to vote for Nazis Depression allows Hitler to come to power. Effects of depression on Germany after 1929? The Great Depression, shattering economic prosperity from 1929 on, presented Hitler with a fabulous opportunity. Unemployment jumped from 1.3 million in 1929 to 5 million in 1930; that year Germany had almost as many unemployed as all the other countries of Europe combined. Industrial production fell by one half between 1929 and 1932. By the end of 1932, an incredible 43 percent of the labor force was unemployed. No factor contributed more to Hitler’s succes than the economic crisis. Hitler began promising German voters economic as well as political and international salvation. He rejected free-market capitalism and advocated government programs to bring recovery. Hitler pitched his speeches especially to middle and lower-middle class groups which were small buisness people, office workers, artisans, and peasants as well as to skilled workers striving for middle class status. In the election of 1930 the Nazis won 6.5 million votes and 107 seats, which made them second in strength only to the Social Democrats, the moderate socialists. Hitler and the Nazis made more dramatic gains. In July 1932, the Nazis gained 14.5 million votes, 38 percent of the total and became the largest party in the Reichstag. In 1931almost 40 percent of Nazi party members were under thirty, compared with 20 percent of Social Democrats. This was when Hitler came to power. Relationship between depression and rise in popularity of Nazis? Was mentioned in the above answer. Nazi election results 1928, July 1932? Was mentioned in the above answer. How Hitler comes to power
Hitler appointed Chancellor January 30, 1933
Joseph Goebbels and Nazi Propaganda He was the Head of the Nazi propaganda ministry. A cynical Joseph Goebbels put it, “When I hear the word ‘culture’ I reach for my gun.” Leni Riefenstahl, Triumph of the Will: why significant? In Germany, Hitler turned to a young and immensely talented woman film maker, Leni Riefenstahl for a masterpiece of documentary propaganda, The Triumph of the Will, based on the Nazi party rally at Nuremburg in 1934. Leni Riefenstahl combined stunning aerial photography, joyful crowds welcoming Hitler, and mass processions of young Nazi fanatics. Her film was a brilliant and all-too-powerful documentary of Germany’s “Nazi rebirth”. What was the SA? Why were they called Brownshirts? Hitler also organized a private army he called storm troopers. He used brown-shirted uniforms and the swastika emblem to give his party and the storm troopers—known as the SA—a sense of unity and power. The troopers fought the armies of the Communist, Social Democratic, and other parties who opposed Nazi ideas or tried to break up Nazi Party rallies. By October 1923, the storm troopers numbered 15,000 members. They had a considerable number of machine guns and rifles. I added my answer just incase: The army as well as big buisness was suspicious of the Nazi storm troopers (the SA), the quasi-military band of 3 million toughs in brown shirts who had fought communists and beaten up Jews before Nazis took power. These storm troopers expected top positions in the army and even talked of a “second revolution” against capitalism. Hitler devided that the SA leaders had to be eliminated. Who were the SS? What role did they have in the Holocaust? Who was Heinrich Himmler? They were the personal body guards which was lead by Heinrich Himmler. They were eventually put in charge of the Holocaust. My answer: The SS were Hitler’s elite personal guard. The arrested and shot without trial roughly a thousand SA leaders and assorted political enemis. His propagandists then spread lies about SA conspiracies. Shortly thereafter army leaders swore a binding oath of “unquestioning obedience…to the Leader of the German State and People, Adolf Hitler.” The SS grew rapidly. Under its methodical inhuman leader, Heinrich Himmler, the SS joined with the political police, the Gestapo, to expand its network of special courts and concentration campls. Nobody was safe. Himmler and the elite corps of SS volunteers, supported (or condoned) by military commanders and German policemen in the occupied territories, pressed relentlessly to implement this program of destruction even before victory was secured. In western Poland, the SS arrested and evacuated Polish peasants to cleanse the region and creat a “mass settlement space” for Germans. What was the swastika? The symbol of the National Socialist Party of Germany (The Nazi Party). As such it came to be one of the most hated symbols in the history of humanity. It came to stand for all the evil associated with the Nazis as they gained control of Europe before and during World War II. After the Allies defeated Germany in 1945, they banned the display of the swastika emblem. My answer: In the early twentieth century, a right facing swastika which is rotated through 45 degrees, was used as the symbol of German Will by the German Nazi Party and it is still closely associated, in the West, with this use. In modern times, the symbolism of the Nazi swastika has been used by neo-Nazis and other hate groups. Because of this, its use outside historical contexts has become a taboo in much of the world. However, before being associated with Nazism, the swastika meant “good luck”, “well being” or “it is good”. It was related to luck, fascism, samsara or the sun. The swastika is used as a symbol by Buddhists, Hindus, Jainists, and Nazis. Hitler’s consolidation of power (1933-34): Reichstag Fire; Enabling Act; banning of all parties; Hitler becomes President; Night of the Long Knives
Nazi anti-semitic policies to 1939: early discrimination; Nuremberg Laws (1935); From 1933 onwards: Boycott of Jewish stores and forcing Jews out of important jobs. In 1935; Nuremberg Laws Jews deprived of German citizenship now called “subjects of the German state”. Jews and Aryans forbidden to marry or have sexual relations. My answer: Section 1: Marriages between Jews and citizens of German or kindred blood are forbidden. Marriages concluded in defiance of this law are void, even if, for the purpose of evading this law, they were concluded abroad. Proceedings for annulment may be initiated only by the Public Prosecutor. Section 2: Sexual relations outside marriage between Jews and nationals of German or kindred blood are forbidden. Section 3: Jews will not be permitted to employ female citizens of German or kindred blood as domestic servants. Section 4: Jews are forbidden to display the Reich and national flag or the national colours. On the other hand they are permitted to display the Jewish colours. The exercise of this right is protected by the State. Section 5: A person who acts contrary to the prohibition of Section 1 will be punished with hard labour. A person who acts contrary to te prohibition of Section 2 will be punished with imprisonment or with hard labour. A person who acts contrary to the provisions of sections 3 or 4 will be punished with imprisonment up to a year and with a fine, or with one of these penalties. Kristallnacht (1938); which country suffered most as a result of the Holocaust? Known as the “Night of Broken Glass”- Jewish businesses smashed synagogs and burned many Jews. After this, many Jews tried to leave Germany. My answer: Kristallnacht or “Night of Broken Glass” (given this name due to the shattered glass from the store windows that littered the streets) was set off by Germans' anger over the assassination of a German official in Paris at the hands of a Jewish teenager. German propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels and other Nazis carefully organized the pogroms. In two days, over 1,000 synagogues were burned, 7,000 Jewish buisnesses were trashed and looted and dozens of Jewish people were killed, and Jewish cemeteries, hospitals, schools, and homes were looted while police and fire brigades stood by. 30,000 German Jewish men were arrested for the”crime” of being Jewish and sent to concentration camps, where hundreds of the perished. Some Jewish women were also arrested and sent to local jails. Busunesses owned by Jews were not allowed to reopen. Curfews were placed on Jews, limiting the hours of the day they could leave their homes. After this night, life was even more difficult for German and Austrian Jewish children and teenagers. Already barred from entering museums, public playgrounds, and swimming pools, now they were expelled from public schools. Poland suffered the most as a result of the Holocaust because of its large amount of Jewish people and their deaths. Nazi Economic Policy: how did Germany get out of the Depression by 1936?
Lebensraum
German rearmament – League of Nations reaction?
Anglo-German naval agreement (1935): why significant?
Italian invasion of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) – League reaction?
Hitler remilitarizes the Rhineland (1936) – League reaction?
British /French Policy of Appeasement towards Hitler – why? How successful?
The Spanish Civil War: causes? Sides? Francisco Franco. Which foreign powers participated? Which remained neutral? Who won? Pablo Picasso’ Guernica (why sig? Inspired by which event?)
Hitler’s Anschluss of Austria (March 1938)
Hitler’s demand for Sudetenland – why? Munich conference and agreement – why sig?
Neville Chamberlain: why sig?
Nazi invasion of Czechoslovkia (March 1939) – sig? During March of 1939, the Nazi’s invaded Czechoslovakia which was the trigger of the war between Germany and Britain. Hitler kept on going against the Treaty of Versailles but the British decided not to do anything about it because they didn’t want another big war but after the invasion of Czechoslovakia, it pretty much got them sick and tired of Hitler. The Nazi-Soviet Pact (Aug. 1939): why? What were the provisions?
Nazi invasion of Poland (Sep. 1, 1939) – sig? |

1. Long term and short term causes of the First World War. 1. a. After Franco-Prussian war, completed German unification, Germany becomes known as second reich and ruled by Kaiser. Bismarck persued policy of peace for Germany by making alliances with other countries to avoid a war on two fronts. so germany makes alliance with russian, austria, and itay. these last two form triple alliance with Germany, one of two competing blocks that will help to cause WWI. b. Big change in Germany. Kaiser Wilhelm I dies, succeded by his son, Wilhem II --> Wilhelm II dismisses Bismarck, then Wilhelm II begins to persue agressive policies to give Germany a large role in the world (Weltpolitik). c. Wilhelm II begins to destroy diplomatic work of Bismarck by following policies that alienate other countries. d. Because of Kaiser's actions, France, Britain, Russia drew closer. e. Very significant factor that has nothing to do with Germany --> serbian nationalism --> went to unite all south slavic peoples in one state --> requires attacking Austro-Hungarian empire, where many slavic people live. f. Serbian nationalist and member of Black Hand (terrorist group) assassinates Archduke Franz Ferninand of Austria --> Austria asks germany if they will support them when they go to war with serbia and russia (they say yes).
2. Wilhelm II- how were his policies different from Bismarcks? 2. Bismarck persueded policy of peace for Germany by making alliances with other countries to avoid war on two fronts and Wilhelm II followed policies that alienate other countries.
3. The Anglo- German naval race. Why? Effects? Who was Tirpitz? 3. Kaiser starts build up of Germany navy (under admiral Tirpetz) to challenge Britains naval predominance.
4. The development of competing alliance systems? what were they called? which countries made up each of them? 4. So Britain, France, and Russia gther together.
5. The role of Pan-Slavic/Serbian nationalism in causing the war. 5. Serbian nationalism --> went to unite all south slavic peoples in one state --> requires attacking austria-hungarian empire, where many slavic people live --> Gavrilo Princip (Serbian nationalist and member of Black Hand) assassinates Franz Ferninand of Austria --> Austria asks Germany will support them in war with Serbia (they say yes) --> Austria gives Serbia an ultimatum --> they reject --> Austria declares war on serbia.
6. Assassination of archduke Franz Ferninand. Who? Why? Effect? 6.
7. How did Kaiser Wilhelm II provoke other European countries over their colonies? 7. Agressively questions France's rights to their colonies which increased intercontinental tension.
8.Austria's ultimatum to Serbia. Consequences? 8.
9. Germany's "blank check" to Austria: significance? 9.
10. Crisis of July 1914? Why does Austrias attack on Serbia lead to war involving so many European powers? the sequence of events that bring about war? 10. :D that was fun
11. What are conditions like in the trenches? 11. They were horrible; young soldiers died and so when a soldiers fellow man died, they were surrounded by them and ended up in disillusionment, shell-shocked, etc.
12. Why does trench warfare develop in the West? 12.
13. Role of Italy in WWI? Turkey? Bulgaria? 13.
14. T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia): significance? What was the Arab revolt? Why did the British want to encourage it? 14. During WWI, he worked in the Middle East --> sent to encourage arab tribes to revolt against ottoman empire --> British government tells arabs that if they revolt they will gain independance when was is over.
15. The Sykes-Picot Treaty: Date? What did it say? 15. 1916. It said that the British would give France half of the Middle East after the war was over (lying to the arabs)
16. What kind of weapons are used in WWI? 16. pistols, bayonets, swords, machine guns (most IMPORTANT), gases, barrage, tanks, aircrafts, flamethrowers.
17. Attitudes towards war in 1914. How do they change as war progress? 17. When the war was about to begin, everyone thought that this would be a simple and short war. When the war actually began, they noticed that milions of people were dying and the war was never ending, their attitudes changed for the worst.
18. Germany's Schlieffen Plan. What is it? What is its purpose? 18. It was to deal with the war on two fronts. They planned on attacking France via Belgium which did not suceed. The purpose of this was to destroy France (who was allied with Russia) before they fought with Russia.
19. First Battle of the Marne; Gallipoli; the Somme; Second Battle of the Marne. 19. First Battle of the Marne --> France stop German advance at start of war - signals failure of Schlieffen plan.
20. What effect did WWI have on women? 20. Women started working in industry, transportation, and labor forces in Russia. They began driving buses and street cars. Also became bank tellers, mail carriers, and police officers. Granted the right to vote. Started to smoke, wear shorter skirts in public, and bob their hair.
21. What is total war? 21. It is when a country is devoted only to the war and nothing else (like food, industry, etc.)
22. Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon, Ivor Gurney.. Who were they and what did they write? 22. They were all poets of WWI. Wilfred Owen wrote "Dulce et Decorum Est" meaning It is sweet and proper to die for your country. Rupert Brooke wrote "The Soldier". Sassoon wrote "Glory of Women". Gurney wrote "To his love"
QUESTIONS I DONT HAVE THE ANSWERS TO 1. Effect of unification of Germany on European balance of power. 2. Why is it so difficult for armies to break through? 3. What effect did WWI have on the economies of the major combatants? How did it change them?
RUSSIAN REVOLUTION SECTION
1. What was the provisional government? What were its policies with regard to land redistribution? the war? 1.
2. Who was Alexander Kerensky? 2. An agrarian socialist who thought that the continuation of war was still the all-important national duty. there would be plenty of time for land reform later, and thus all the governments efforts were directed toward a last offensive in July.
3. What was the Petrograd Soviet? Why was it significant? 3. They shared power with the provisional government. Its job was to suspiciously watch the provisional government. Issued its own radical orders --> weakening the provisional government.
4. What was Army Order No. 1? 4. The order was to strup officers of their authority and placed power in the hands of the elected committees of common soldiers.
5. Who were the Bolsheviks? How where they different from the Mensheviks? 5. The Bolshevik was Lenin's camp where he demanded a small, disciplined, elitist party. The Mensheviks, on the other hands, wanted a democratic party with mass membership. Bolsheviks- "the majority group"; Mensheviks- "the minority group"
6. Who was Lenin? What were his 3 main ideas about revolution. 6.
7. What were Lenins slogans that he used to gain support from the workers and peasants during the summer of 1917? 7. "All power to the Soviets" , "All land to the peasants" , "Stop the war now"
8. Who was Leon Trotsky? Why was he significant? 8.
9. How did the Bolsheviks come to power? Once they had achieved power, how did the Bolsheviks hold on to it? 9. Since democracy was giving way to anarchy, power was there for those who would take it. It had something that the Tsarist and the provisional government did not have; a determined and truly superior leadership. They were good at appealing soldiers and urban workers who were exhausted by war and eager for socialism. They way that they held on to that power was because they had a closed constitutional assembly and established one-party state, used terror (cheka), "War communism" - the state takes over all functions - all food requisitioned from peasants without pay, and they won the civil war.
10. Why was there a civil war in Russia between 1918 and 1921? Who won it? Why? 10.
11. What was the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk? 11. A treaty that the Germans and the Russians made. Lenin and the Bolsheviks said that they did not want war so Germany said that they wouldnt attack Russia if they gave them 1/3 of their land and that is what Lenin did.
12. Why did the first Russian Revolution (March 1917) happen? Causes? 12. Tension of WWI
13. What was the Duma? 13. Russia's lower house.
14. Who was Rasputin? Why was he significant? 14.
15. Who ruled Russia in 1917? How did he rule? 15. Czar Nicholas II. He ruled like a medieval king.. had total power.
16. Effects of Russian Revolution of October 1917 on course of WWI. 16. revolution caused the (Bulshivicks) to get out of the war.. thank u kristen :)
17. What was the attitude of the Bolsheviks toward WWI? 17. they wanted to be out of the war. lenin wanted them out..
For people who are doing an essay i think he would use this topic.. Thought Lenin was a Marxist he didnt believe in some of the things that Marx said. What were they? Marx believed that only proletariats are revolutionary, Lenin believed that peasants could also be a revolutionary force. Marx believed that revolution can only come where capitalism is highly advanced, Lenin believed that revolution can come in industrially backward country like Russia. Marx believed that revolution will be led by Proletariat, Lenin believed that revolution will be lef by small elite of proffessional revolutionaries.

Second is War Guilt Clause- Germans forced to be responsible for starting the war and therefore must pay huge reperations (payments) --> exact amount to be determined later. Last is territory -- Germany lose Alsace Lorraine to France and Polish Lorridor to Poland.
7. What was the League of Nations? 7. It was the precursor of the United Nations. Tried to preserve peace by collective security. President Wilson proposed that in order to not have another very large war again, all countries must stop another country from attacking before it gets too big... this was not successful.
8. Which countries/systems of government disappeared? 8. Austria- Hungarian, Ottoman, Russian, and German Empires.
9. Wilson's fourteen points -- what were they? How easy were they to implement? 9.
10. The entry of Americans into the war? Why? When? Consequences? 10. 2. Spring 1917: Russian revolution occurs: Czar Nicholas II abdicates and RUssia begins to set up constitutional government --> this makes it easier for Wilson to ally with Russians, now that it is a fellow democratic nation. |

yo.. havent updated in a while because i was being lazy but im back now so everything is good. well everything has been wonderful except my whole honor council thing. to anyone who wants to know the story here it is cause alot of people were asking about.. so we were in the locker room and jenny asked if anyone had an extra pe shirt but i thought she said she needed shorts so i looked to the locker next to me and i saw a pair of shorts there and i told jenny to take those and she told me that she didnt need those, that she needed a shirt so i put the shorts back. then jennings called me over and she was like "wut did u take from that locker" and i said "shorts" and she goes "put them back" and i told her that i already did that so she forgot about it. then when pe class was over she came up to me and she said that i took the shorts because the shorts were gone and that she was gonna report me to zevada w/e shes a dike.. so i went to zevada and i told him the story and he told me that i stole but i really didnt cause i put it right back, great so he said that i was going to the honor council since its my second offense and at first i was scurred because i thought that if they prove me guilty then i would be expelled but that wasnt true (gracias olivia, soleil, and adri.. wub u).. so after while i just didnt give a shit. w/e so i also needed to choose a "lawyer" to defend me so i chose mr.moorehouse, greatest man ever, so yes today i told mooreman the whole story and then he went to go talk to zevada and somehow convinced him to reconsider if he wants to take me to the honor council.. so i went to zevada once again and i told him that i was wrong for doing that and that stealing it wasnt my intention and he told me that i had to buy that girl new pair of shorts and that he still has to talk to chapman and see if he still wants to put me on honor council.. as i said before.. he can suck my big thumb if he wants lmaooo angie..im wubbin it haha..and then i talked the jennings and she brought over the girl who i "took" the shorts from and she said she saw me take the shorts and put them on, that fuckin idiot.. so anyways jennings was writing down everything we were talking about and i have to buy the girl the shorts and well tommorrow we will see wut they decide..either than that, no problems at allll..today was pretty exciting, especially that lovely convocation..played some vicious girls "basketball".. I OWN U LUCHIII bwaha..after school mike took us to pearls (thank u mike for taking us, sorry u missed some of her game) and we listened to some of his ghetto gansta music.. pussy all over the room!!! lmao..and then he dropped us off and came in for a few minutes, i ordered him the wrong food but w/e..so me and kenza just finished the project and now we r going to go visit my dear vicky..im out like a deaf kid in musical chairs.. lmaoo.. laytaa |
